Tibetan Students Protest Language ReformsTibetan students in Western China have been protesting the Chinese regime's unconfirmed plans to use Chinese language exclusively to teach classes in both elementary and high schools. The protest happened in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Huangnan, in Qinghai province, on Tuesday. London-based rights group "Free Tibet" says six thousand students, between 14 and 20 years old, took part. The students marched in the morning, eventually gathering outside the headquarters of local authorities in Huangnan. The Governor and Director General of the education department in the autonomous region reportedly assured students on Tuesday there would be no change to the current language policy while they are in office. Yet, they also warned students that if protests continue, they would expel the ringleaders from their schools. These assurances didn't mean much to one former middle school teacher in Tongren, who told Free Tibet, quote, "The Chinese are enforcing reforms which remind me of the Cultural Revolution. This reform is not only a threat to our mother-tongue, but is in direct violation of the Chinese constitution which is meant to protect our rights. For Tibetans the Chinese constitution is meaningless." High school education already exclusively uses Chinese, as do university entrance exams. Rights groups say this puts Tibetans at a disadvantage and leads to Tibetan poverty.

WutuThis ritual was performed on 30 December 1996 in Gnyan thog (Nianduhu) Village, Gnyan thog Township, Tongren County, Rma lho (Huangnan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, located in the east-central part of Qinghai Province, situated in northwest China. West of the Rong bo River, the village was home to 250 families and had a total population of approximately 1500. Gnyan thog residents are officially classified as Tu (Monguor), a non-Islamic Mongolic people numbering 190000 in 1996. They live primarily in Qinghai and Gansu provinces. The ritual's primary goal is to expel all evil of the past year from the village. The date of the ceremony is the twentieth day of the eleventh lunar month. A paper describing this ritual may be downloaded for free at www.digitalhimalaya.com Photographs of the ritual in 2007 may be viewed at www.flickr.com and provide a comparison to the event in 1996. Wednesday's incident took place in the middle of a square named after Dolma, a Buddhist deity of compassion, which was mainly empty at the time due to a prayer session being in progress. An elderly Tibetan man is reported to have spotted the burning monk and smothered out the flames by hugging him and stamping out the fire with his hands. Chinese security forces arrived in large numbers to disperse a crowd of several hundred monks and local Tibetans who had converged on the square. A source told VOA that as Palden was taken by security forces and some Tibetans to a hospital, the people in the square, "refused to disperse and instead recited prayers and called for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet." Laru/ klu rol: Summer Qinghai Tibetan Ritual (1996)See: Dpal ldan bkra shis and Kevin Stuart. 1998. 'Perilous Novelties': The A mdo Tibetan Klu rol Festival in Gling rgyal Village. ANTHROPOS 93: 31-53. www.archive.org for a description of this ritual. Gling rgyal Tibetan Village, Rma lho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China is the site of a summer festival known as klu rol (water deities entertainment). The purpose of the festival is to please mountain deities through the village's two resident, male trance mediums. The mountain deities are beseeched to protect the village's crops and livestock and exorcize evils from the villagers through villagers' dances and sacrificial offerings. Filmed in 1996 by Zhu Yongzhong, this is the oldest reasonably complete film of the ritual we are aware of. It is particularly valuable in recording the ritual before the arrival of tourists in large numbers.
